Despite its acquisition by the Volkswagen Group, Italdesign retain some independence. Proof: Fabrizio Giugiaro Giorgietto and had ample opportunity to produce two new concepts, presented in Geneva at a press conference under the auspices of Walter da Silva, Director of Volkswagen Group Design.
At first glance, the Tex exhales a fragrance of miniature Scirocco (with a length of 3.99 m, Tex makes him 26 cm). Coincidentally, the first generation of this compact must cut its Giugiaro lines. For this concept, Italdesign does not return to its fundamentals, avoiding the convoluted details for a healthy balance of volume. Unspectacular (or almost old-fashioned) at first, Tex seduced by its sporty silhouette and precisely proportioned.
In detail, the treatment of glass surfaces (tailgate and roof in particular) arises in the direct lineage concepts Italdesign past. Rims, typically Volkswagen, recall the new ownership of the design studio. As for the name, it is the cartoon character Tex Willer, alter ego of Italian Lieutenant Blueberry. The logo that adorns the butt of this concept also directly incorporates the graphic comic book series.
On a technical side, the Tex takes a platform designed by Volkswagen. This concept, like the Go! Also presented by Giugiaro, is intended to demonstrate the flexibility of this new platform called MQB (Quer-Baukasten for Modular - or cross platform modular). The first series of models using this base will emerge next year.
If the Go! Has an electric motor, Tex chose on the same platform for a plug-in hybrid powertrain. A 1.4 TSI 150 hp (225 Nm of torque) is associated with an electric motor capable of developing 85 kW (115 hp) peak and 45 kW (61 hp) continuous and 260 Nm of torque. The combined maximum power rises to 177 kW (241 hp) and 400 Nm of torque transmission is handled by a dual-clutch gearbox DSG seven-speed.
Performances should prove interesting. In addition to a top speed of 220 km / h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h achieved in 6 seconds, Italdesign announces autonomy in all electric mode for 35 km. No figures for consumption or recharge lithium-ion battery (with a capacity of 8.5 kWh) is announced by cons.
Attractive on paper and in the spotlight at the Geneva Palexpo, Tex might not stop there. Fabrizio Giugiaro asserts that the feasibility has been a major concern that led to the design concept. "We designed the Tex thinking of what could become the sport Volkswagen in the near future. We have deliberately maintained a family resemblance that identifies it as a model Volkswagen close to production. Select All visionary and futuristic were discarded. We prefer a natural evolution of the aesthetic current, combined with technologies that reach the market in the very near future. "
Like the Alfa Romeo Brera Giugiaro also signed a few years ago, the Volkswagen Tex could also go from concept to the series. He would then present an attractive competitor to another small hybrid coupe, Honda CR-Z.
